Holy week is the most celebrated week in the life of the Christian Church. It
serves to remind us that the gift of salvation that God freely offers to each of
us did not come without price for Christ. We are called Easter People
because we are people of the resurrection, but we need to stay focused on and
remember that we have had a part to play in making the suffering of Christ come
about.
To fully experience the wonder and glory of Holy Week, and all God has done for
us, you should try to attend all of the Holy Week services.
Holy Week is launched on Palm Sunday (8:30 & 11:00 AM) which is the day we
celebrate the triumphal entry into Jerusalem just five days before his
crucifixion. It serves to remind us that while Jesus is praised and
honored he is also turned against by those who were just honoring and praising
him.
The Holy Thursday Service is April
1st at 7:00 PM. On Holy Thursday, we commemorate the institution of the
Lord’s Supper by Christ. Holy Thursday is also the night on which Jesus
was betrayed and denied by two of his closest followers. At the end of the
service, we will strip the church of the icons, paraments, and banners and they
will not be replaced until we prepare for Easter Sunday services. The
stripping of the church is done to symbolize the time that Christ spent in the
tomb.
The Good Friday Service at April 2nd at 7:00 PM. Good Friday is the day we
commemorate the crucifixion of Christ. Many people ask why it is called
Good Friday. Good, as an adjective applied to the day, is an Old English
expression for "holy” (The Dictionary of Bible and Religion). The
Sanctuary will also be open from 12:00 until 3:00 PM as a time for prayer if you
would like to drop by.
Easter Sunday Services will be celebrated at 6:30, 8:30 &
11:00 AM. The Easter Sunrise Service will be followed by a church-wide
breakfast. Easter is the most glorious Sunday celebration on the church
calendar.
